The San Francisco Bay is one of the most popular spots for casual swimmers and those looking to get in a workout as well. But unfortunately, there have been a string of recent sea lion attacks that are keeping swimmers out of one of their favorite spots. In the past few weeks at least four confirmed cases of sea lion attacks have been confirmed. While there is no sure reason for the rise in the number of attacks it can be assumed that the sea lions feel that their habitat has been infringed upon and thus they are lashing out in order to defend their territory. Signs have been posted for quite some time now warning swimmers of the dangers that may lurk in the water before them. Reporting by the local news team and pictures of the posted signs can be found here. There are certain infections that can be associated with sea lion bites so it is extremely important to avoid swimming in these posted areas as well as any others where there have been sea lion sightings. The attacks typically have occurred during low tide but city officials are recommending that swimmers avoid the most affected areas at all times of the day until the reason for these seemingly random attacks has been identified and a remediation plan has been implemented. Moving forward, swimmers will have to find a way to either coexist with the sea creatures or find other places to enjoy a nice weekend getaway or exercise.
