Sleep apnea, the sleep disorder in which sufferers stop breathing throughout their sleep, affects approximately 12 million Americans, and an alarming 90% or so of sufferers remain undiagnosed. Sleep apnea causes a lack of oxygen to the brain and body while the sufferer isn’t breathing, and new research finds that the widespread disorder can lead to very serious health conditions. These health conditions include psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety, as well as serious physical and potentially-fatal physical problems like heart failure and diabetes.
Dr. Avi Weisfogel, founder of Dental Sleep Masters, takes these potential health conditions very seriously, and has been leading the way in sleep apnea research and treatment solutions.
Previous treatments for sleep apnea have been deemed largely unpopular, and their reported effectiveness has been spotty. Dr. Weisfogel has hopes that the development of smaller and more efficient mechanical devices will replace the clunky, noisy, and claustrophobic devices which have been so unpopular with patients.
Under the guidance of Dr. Weisfogel, Dental Sleep Masters is providing dentists with the tools they need to treat sleep apnea by educating them as well as providing them with appliances which can be inserted into the mouth to treat the disorder.
Dr. Avi Weisfogel opened his first dental practice in 1999, and shortly thereafter he began studying sleep disorders intensely. Realizing that the dental industry could assist in treating sleep disorders, Dr. Weisfogel founded Dental Sleep Masters in 2014, hoping to give other dentists the tools they need to diagnose and treat sleep apnea, among other sleep disorders.
