Swimmer Doesn’t Let Health Issues Stop Him

Charlie Weatherbee has had many challenges, but he does not let that stop him from getting in the pool. He once stepped on a piece of glass while he was walking out of his garage. He had to go to the hospital to get stitches. He had problems walking, but he was back in the pool the next day.

Charlie also had a heart attack, but he was back in the pool one week later. His doctor had talked to him about cardiac rehab about two weeks. Charlie was amused because he was already exercising. Charlie’s heart attack was two months ago. He recently competed in the Florida Senior Games in Clearwater. He now has 104 medals and has competed in the Senior Games 18 times.

Charlie stated that the best rehab is to be in the pool. He is 85-years-old, but he does not plan to stop swimming. He worked for the Miami Fire Department for 25 years before he retired. He was a paramedic lieutenant. He knew exactly what he was having a heart attack.

Charlie stated that he felt like an elephant was standing on his chest. He took an Aspirin, but he ended up throwing it up. He drove himself to the hospital. Charlie’s heart problems was what drove him to start swimming. He started swimming after he had an angioplasty in 1989.

Charlie admitted that there are days that he does not feel like getting in the pool. However, he stated that those are his most rewarding days.
