The Corpus Christi Evening Rotary Club will be helping children learn how to swim. They raised $2,000 to fund swimming classes for children. John Carroll is a part of the rotary club. He stated that the rotary club members were motivated to start this service project when they discovered how many children grew up without knowing how to swim.

It is estimated that 76 percent of the people who drown are children who are under the age of 5. Twenty percent of the people who die from drowning are under the age of 14. William Goodrich is another member of the rotary club. He stated that all children need to learn how to swim so that they do not have to fear water.

William stated that a child’s mindset towards swimming can be changed if they are taught at young age. Twenty students at Evans Elementary School have enrolled in swimming classes thanks to the rotary club. None of the children were able to participate in physical education classes at their school.

Raul Monoz is a physical education teacher at Evans Elementary School. He stated that he has noticed the change in the children’s confidence after they took swimming classes. Bianca Rodriquez is a first grade student at Evans Elementary School. She stated that she was afraid of the water at first, but her confidence has increased. She loves swimming now.
