Population growth has resulted in the destruction of terrestrial and aquatic
habitats. There is also the issue of ecosystem collapse and biodiversity loss.
Since our culture is growth-driven, such issues are rarely viewed because of
overpopulation. Although Mrs. May brought up this issue before it materialized,

The Colcom Foundation Weighs in on the Rebound Effect 

There is a belief that an increase in efficiency will lower the rate at which humans
consume natural resources. This idea is applicable; however, there is the issue
of overpopulation. Also, it would be advisable to use renewable energy sources
instead of fossil fuels. There is also a debate about whether GMOs can safely
and efficiently feed the earth’s population.

According to economists, using resources efficiently leads to an increase in
the total consumption of resources. The contradictory phenomenon in this case
is referred to as the “Rebound Effect”. The Rebound
Effect usually manifests in different ways. First, there is the direct rebound
effect whereby when the efficiency of a product improves, it becomes
affordable, leading to frequent use by consumers, which means the potential
environmental benefits will not be achieved. There is also the indirect rebound
effect whereby increased efficiency in one area usually leads to increased
consumption in different areas. For instance, improved insulation can lead to
lower energy bills and in turn an individual will spend the money they have
saved on other goods and services.

Over the years, overpopulation has proven to be a major issue, which is why family
