Justin Nelson Pushes Wealth Management to Widen Hiring Lens
Wealth management firms compete constantly for analytical talent, yet Justin Nelson believes many are searching in the wrong place for new hires. Nelson, who leads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut and oversees more than $15 billion in client assets, has become a vocal advocate for hiring neurodiverse professionals across the industry, speaking from firsthand experience managing a large team.
A Pool Hiding in Plain Sight
Nelson notes that neurodiverse candidates often bring exactly the skills wealth management prizes most, including strong computational ability and creative problem-solving, yet get screened out early because of how interviews are structured today at most firms. “Usually what that means is that while they may have a harder time connecting and communicating, they’re exceptional in other areas,” he said.
Changing the Filter, Not the Standard
Nelson is careful to note that hiring neurodiverse talent does not mean lowering expectations for new employees joining a demanding team. Instead, it means changing how firms filter for ability in the first place during recruitment. Justin Nelson’s message to peers across JP Morgan and the broader industry is that the analytical bar stays exactly where it should be. What changes is simply the process used to find people capable of clearing that bar in the first place.
Justin Nelson’s broader hope is that other JP Morgan teams, and firms across wealth management more generally, start treating neurodiverse hiring as a standard recruiting channel rather than an occasional exception handled case by case.
Nelson’s view challenges a common assumption in wealth management: that the most adaptable, conversationally fluent candidates are automatically the strongest hires. Justin Nelson JP Morgan suggests raw analytical capability, properly identified, can matter more than interview polish in the long run. Wealth management firms slow to make that adjustment, Nelson suggests, will keep losing out on candidates their competitors eventually learn to recognize.
